Every year the rice harvest is celebrated in Kapal Village, Mengwi, by throwing rice cakes at each other in one of the largest traditional food fights in the world.
Before the fight, local men gather in the village temple to give thanks for the plentiful harvest. After prayers have been made they head to the temple courtyard to commence the first rice cake fight.
Divided into two groups, cooked rice wrapped in a woven coconut leaf known locally as "tipat" is thrown at each other. This is just the warm up to the main event, which takes place in the village street outside the temple.
The joyful battle is held in the fourth month in the Balinese calendar, called Sasih Kapat, which falls around September or October.
