The popular town of Ubud may becoming busier and busier, but there are still some areas where time seems to have stood still and you can get away from the development of tourist hotels and private villas.

One such place is the breathtaking Campuhan Ridge, just a few minutes' drive (or bicycle ride) from the center of Ubud. There is a lovely walk that passes along the top of the ridge, with stunning scenery on either side.

A circular route (8.5km) begins at the Ubud Palace and takes approximately 3.5 hours to complete, however in this blog post we explain the shorter option available which covers a leisurely 4km - 6km.

The walk begins at the Warwick Ibah Luxury Villas & Spa on Jl. Campuhan. Turn as if you are going to the hotel and drive 50 m further along down to the school where you can park your bike. This is also where the Gunung Lebah Temple is currently undergoing massive renovations.

Take the pathway to the right of the bridge that leads to the temple, and continue for a few meters to where it evens out onto a paved road. This is the start of the "Campuhan Ridge Walk" that passes between two lush river valleys.

The pathway leads uphill for a short time, but it's not too strenuous and you will most likely be stopping several times to admire the scenery in any case so you can catch your breath then.

By 9am the sun is already hot in Bali, and by mid-day it's almost too warm for some. We recommend getting as early a start as possible (the sun rises at around 6am here), or to wait until later in the afternoon once it starts cooling down a little.

The path then leads through a small village with several art shops and local houses. Continue along the unpaved road for about 500m to Karsa Kafe, a charming little open-air cafe with gorgeous rice field views.

Simple local food such as bak mie goreng, nasi goreng and nasi campur is served in one of the three bales overlooking lotus ponds filled with fish, and there's even a small spa where you can have a relaxing massage before the walk back.

The Campuhan Ridge Walk is a wonderfully peaceful way to spend a few hours taking in all the sights and sounds of the rural countryside around Ubud, and is a must for any nature-lover. We're already planning our next trip back!
