12 Fun Water Activities in Bali 2014.08.04

water

Bali may be known for its famed terraced rice fields and fascinating culture, but it's also a popular destination for those looking to take part in exciting water activities like parasailing, jet skiing and wakeboarding.

Marine sports take place all over the island, however it's the beaches of Tanjung Benoa where hoards of tourists come to enjoy a day of fun in the sun on (or in) the water.  In this blog post we'll introduce you to some of the water activities available in and around Bali.

Snorkeling

The most basic of marine sports should not be overlooked. Bali offers some fantastic snorkeling opportunities, especially in the little bays around Amed and further afield in the Gili Islands, where you may even be lucky enough to spot a turtle or two.

Snorkeling can be enjoyed by all ages, and requires little equipment other than a snorkel and fins (which can be easily hired on beaches where snorkeling is popular). You can also snorkel at your own pace, making it rather leisurely as water activities go.

Visibility is not great around Serangan and Benoa however if you're staying at one of the resorts in the area, it's a convenient option. Clearer waters can be found around Padangbai and Nusa Lembongan.

Estimated cost
$20 per person

Banana Boat

Banana Boat Ride on Paradise Island, 2000

One of the most fun to be had is aboard a "banana boat" - a long inflatable ride that gets towed behind a motorized boat at what seems like great speeds.

Passengers are challenged to cling on and not fall off, although many boat drivers try their best to unceremoniously dump them in the water. Life jackets are a must for this one; if the operator does not provide them, find a different one.

Estimated cost
$10 per person
Time required
About 10 minutes
Location
Benoa, Serangan

Donut Tube

Lake Tahoe - September 2010

Almost as fun as the banana boat, the "donut tube" is an inflatable raft that also gets towed around by a speedboat. Donuts can seat either one, two or four passengers. Hold on tight, because it can be a very bumpy ride!

Estimated cost
$20 per person
Time required
About 10 minutes
Location
Benoa, Serangan

Flying Fish

A relatively new addition to the marine sports scene in Tanjung Benoa is the "flying fish", an inflatable raft that is really just three banana boats joined together (with added modified "wings" on either side).

The ride can seat two passengers and one guide. As the inflatable is pulled out towards the ocean by speedboat, it bounces and "flies" into the air - often up to 2m! This one is not for the faint-hearted, but if it's an adrenaline rush you're after then look no further.

Estimated cost
$25 per person
Time required
About 10 minutes
Location
Benoa, Serangan

Parasailing

Parasailing

A very popular activity at Benoa is parasailing. This water sport gives you an opportunity to have a bird's eye view of the surrounding area, and there's nothing quite like seeing just how big the resorts of Nusa Dua are from the air.

Flying solo is absolutely fine, however for smaller children or those that are a little scared of taking off alone, it's also possible to fly tandem with an instructor.

$15 per person

About 10 minutes
Location
Benoa, Serangan

Jet Ski

Jet skis are another fun way to scoot about the big blue. Make sure you know what you're doing though, as the Benoa beach can be pretty crazy with traffic on the water, especially in the afternoon.

Trained instructors are on hand to give you a quick lesson before you head out, or if you're too young (under the age of 10) one of the instructors can accompany you.

$15 per person
Time required
About 10 minutes
Location
Benoa, Serangan

Wakeboarding

The popular sport of wakeboarding is also now possible in Bali. Strap on your board and hold on as you get towed behind a boat - a warmer alternative to snowboarding!

It's a little tricky to get up on the first go, but once you've got it there will be no stopping you. More experienced wakeboarders can also try moving towards the left or right and even doing jumps.

$25 per person

About 10 minutes

Benoa, Serangan

Glass Bottom Boat

A ride on a glass bottom boat is recommended for those who are not confident or strong in the water, and those who prefer not to get wet. As the name suggests, the bottom of these boats feature a glass panel, allowing passengers to view the coral and marine life below without getting wet.

Although a safer option to explore the ocean, passengers may get a little seasick if waters are not less than calm.

Estimated cost
$15 per person
Time required
About 40 minutes
Location
Benoa, Serangan

Jet Pack

Toughest 2014 Malmö

This crazy sport is relatively new to Bali, having been around for the last year or so. A water jet pack is strapped onto the back and then it's time for take-off!

The high-density propulsion fluid can lift you up to 30 feet high and thrust forward at speeds of 30 miles per hour. Note that you must be 18 years or older to partake in this rather extreme water activity.

Estimated cost
$150 per person
Time required
About 20 minutes
Location
Benoa

Underwater Walk

SeaWalker

If you're not keen on diving but still want to take a peek below the sea, underwater walking is for you. "Seawalker" allows you to walk along the bottom of the ocean bed whilst still breathing normally, thanks to the heavy helmet filled with oxygen that is placed over your head.

The Seawalker station is just three minutes from the beach, and instructors are on hand every step of the way to assist if needed. When walking underwater, your face does not get wet and you can still wear glasses or contact lenses without worry. This activity is also ideal for those who can't swim, as all you do is walk!

Estimated cost
$40 per person
Time required
About 30 minutes
Location
Nusa Lembongan, Benoa, Surangan, Sanur

Submarine

Submarine Tour

The only tourist submarine in Bali is the "Odyssey Submarine", located in the quiet Amuk Bay in East Bali. View coral reef and fish at a depth of up to 35m- it's just like diving, without actually having to dive!

Estimated cost

Adults: $85 per person

Children (under 12): $60 per person

Time required
About 45 minutes (dive time)
Location
Amuk Bay, East Bali

Surfing

Bali's waves are world-famous, and are often featured in surf videos and movies. You don't have to be a pro surfer though to experience the thrill of catching a wave.

The beaches at Kuta and Legian are perfect for beginners to learn how to surf, and there are several surf schools operating in the area. If you already know the basics, it's easy to hire a board from the vendors on the beach and practice in the warm Indian Ocean waters.

Estimated cost
$30 per person
Time required
About 60 minutes
Location
Kuta, Serangan, Sanur

Take note

If you're traveling to Bali you should already have arranged some sort of travel insurance to cover you on your trip. Obvious risks are involved when partaking in water activities, and it's good to know exactly what your policy covers you for.

Many activities are considered as "high risk" and are excluded from insurance cover. Although some operators may include some sort of insurance in the cost of the activity, it may not be adequate should things go seriously wrong.

Be smart when it comes to water sports and make sure that you have sufficient insurance.
