Kuta & Legian Area Guide 2013.07.11

Kuta & Legian, the life and party of Bali

bali_kuta (16) The crowded areas of Kuta and Legian are not for everyone, however if you’re after fun in the sun, then this is the place to be. The area is popular with backpackers and young Australians, and seems to never sleep.

The bustling Jl. Legian is lined with cheap restaurants, local vendors, spas, surf shops and night clubs. Surfers from around the world gather at Kuta Beach to catch a wave, followed by a night out at one of the many nightclubs and bars that stay open until all hours.

For those looking for some retail therapy, Kuta’s Beachwalk shopping center was opened in 2012 and offers a lovely respite during the heat of the day.

Haggling however can be a fun experience, and negotiating a price with local stall vendors is part of Bali's charm. Always remember that once you start bartering, you're committing to a sale and walking away is considered as rude. There's also not much point in spending 20 minutes trying to get someone down only a few bucks, so have fun with it!

Daytime activities in Kuta take place mostly around the beach, where visitors can hire an umbrella and sun lounger and also rent surf boards. For the beginner, it's a good idea to sign up for a surf lesson with one of the many local surf schools.

They usually offer free transfers to and from your hotel and also provide handy facilities like showers and lockers to store your valuables. If the beach doesn't tickle your fancy, another fun day out is Waterbom, a 3.8-hectare waterpark surrounded by tropical gardens.  With over 21 water slides, there's something for everyone. Waterbom is located on Kuta's Kartika Plaza Street, within walking distance from Discovery Shopping Mall.

The popular tourist areas of Kuta and Legian are well known for their vibrant nightlife. Here, holidaymakers and locals alike hit the nightclubs and bars to party the night away. The Hard Rock Cafe on Jl. Pantai Kuta is somewhat of an institution, while Jl. Legian in Kuta is lined with entertainment of every kind, from live music to reggae and dance clubs.

Don't leave your drink unattended and take care with your belongings - drunken tourists are a pickpocket's dream. Taksis run until the early hours of the morning and it's a good idea to have the business card of your hotel handy to show the driver, especially after one or two cocktails!

Spa & Massage

Cheap and cheerful spas are easily found along the main roads and side lanes of Kuta and Legian, with treatments ranging from massages to facials. The larger hotels offer a more upmarket spa experience and usually accept non-staying guests.

  • Popular tourist destination that can get overcrowded
  • Well known for its nightlife and shopping
